Obituary Mr T. J. L. Poole

Mr Tancred (Tanc) John Loftus Poole, a former teacher at Christ’s College, died in Christchurch last week. He was 82. Mr Poole taught at the college from 1944 to 1968. He was house tutor in Flower’s House and School House. He came from Auckland to teach at Temuka, and from there applied for the post at Christ’s College. Mr Poole had a first-class honours degree in philosophy. He taught Classics

and Latin for many years, then book-keeping because he felt book-keeping was something the boys at the college needed to learn. He was a keen gardener and bridge player and was well known for his love of old cars, of which he owned several, including a Stutz. When he left Christ’s College in 1968, Mr Poole spent a year as acting bursar for the University of Canterbury School of Engineering. He. then travelled overseas. Mr Poole never married.
