Body in car in river
PA New Plymouth A woman who disappeared more than two weeks ago was found dead in her car in the Awakino River yesterday. She was Mrs Alison Valentine, aged 49, a widow, of Hawera. The police do not suspect foul play in what is believed to have been an accident, according to Constable Richard Cox, of Piopio. Post Office workers laying underground cables near the Awakino River, about 200 metres north of Mahoenui, at 3 p.m. yester-
day spotted a car wheel. On investigation they discovered the body of Mrs Valentine, who disappeared after she left her Hawera home to visit her daughter near Matamata more than two weeks ago. Constable Cox said it appeared that Mrs Valentine’s car had skidded on a grass verge and dropped six metres over a bank into the Awakino River. “The car landed on its roof in fairly deep water. That is why it would not have been seen,” he said.
