Scrabble tapes kept by champion’s bed

A former New Zealander and now Australian scrabble champion, Lynne Butler, has left for Boston to compete in the North American Scrabble Open competition from July 28 to 31. Ms Butler works as an accountant in Balaclava, Melbourne. She will be one of 300 scrabble players from the United States, Canada, and other English-speaking countries competing for a >lO,OOO first prize and a trip to Hawaii. The winner — the contestant with the highest win-

loss record after 22 rounds of play — will also receive the coveted Scrabble Players Trophy. More than $40,000 in additional prizes will be distributed to other contestants. Ms Butler said she owed her scrabble prowess to a collection of tapes she kept by her bed. The tapes contained a selection of sevenletter words, which tended to be the big point-scorers in scrabble. “I just thought I would give the subliminal learning a try because it is supposed to livery helpful,” she said.
