Jail term promised
PA Tauranga A man was described as a professional receiver when he appeared in the District Court at Tauranga on Wednesday, and was promised a prison sentence. Judge Blackwood said this of Rangi Waaka, aged 33, a beneficiary, who admitted three charges of receiving. He was remanded in custody to August 1 for a probation report and sentence. Waaka received a chainsaw on May 15 at Tauranga, two radio-telephones owned by the New Zealand Railways between January 1 and July 16 at Tauranga, and a .22 calibre rifle on September 28. Sergeant Graeme Troy said that the police searched Waaka’s address on July 16 and found the items. Waaka said he knew the chainsaw was stolen, but would not tell the police who he got it from. den under Waaka’s bed. He said he bought the rifle in a hotel. “This man is a professional receiver and it is only a question of how long he will spend in prison,” the Judge said.
