Coalition against drunkenness
PA Wellington The Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council wants to establish a coalition against drunkenness. The coalition would make drunkenness socially unacceptable and invlove a wide range of community groups and the liquor industry, said the director of the council, Mr Keith Evans. The council agreed to form a committee to look at organising a national meeting of all interested groups aboaut the coalition. Mr Evans said the coalition would be a community-
wide effort. “Drunkenness is almost universally condemned from the football fields of Europe to the highways of New Zealand. There is growing community concern that public intoxication is beginning slowly to be seen in the same category as smoking in the public place,” Mr Evans said. He suggested the council as the catalyst for the coalition which would include representatives from temperance organisations, the liquor industry, Government departments, and local bodies.
