Building permits rise

PA Wellington Building permits issued ip May reached their highest level for eight years, said the Minister of Housing, Mr Goff. Latest Statistics Department figures show that permits authorising the construction of 2292 houses were issued in May, an increase of 10.2 per cent on May last year. Mr Goff said that the

22,217 permits issued in the last year represented an enormous rise of almost 6500 on the May, 1983, figure. While the boom in building activity was an indication of the high level of growth in the economy in the last year, it also reflected the huge level of demand which had built up in the early 1980 s when building activity crashed to its lowest level in decades.
