Jail for assault

PA Tauranga A man who committed a “mindless, stupid” assault in a hotel was sentenced in the District Court at Tauranga yesterday to nine months jail. David Tewa Kingi, aged 25, unemployed, of Tauranga, earlier admitted assaulting Maurice Tawhiti on June 20 with intent to injure him. Judge Gilbert heard earlier that Kingi had kicked Mr Tawhiti in the head while the latter was lying on the floor in the

hotel. A second man, Tihi John Fraser, aged 26, a labourer, of Tauranga, was also charged with the assault. The Court heard earlier that Fraser had pushed Mr Tawhiti to the ground before the kicking began. Fraser had admitted the assault and also admitted a separate charge of driving with excess blood-alcohol at Tauranga on February 5. The Judge remanded Fraser , on bail of $750 on both charges for a probation report and sentence on July 16.
