Climo found not guilty

Greymouth reporter After a retirement of more than 5Vs hours, a jury in the High Court at Greymouth yesterday found Graeme Alan Climo, aged 32, a psychiatric assistant, not guilty on alternative charges of the murder or manslaughter of his wife, Lynnette Barbara Climo, on March 12 at Southside, Hokitika. Climo was discharged by Mr Justice Heron. Thanking the jury for its services over the three-day trial, his Honour said it had been a case with “a great deal of sadness and emotional pressure.”

He asked Mr D. L. Carruthers, who appeared with Mr G. K. Panckhurst for the Crown, to express the Bench’s appreciation to the Hokitika police for their actions in a difficult situation on the night of the incident and the way they had looked after the Climo children. Climo was represented by Mr K. N. Hampton, with him Mr S. J. Hembrow. The jury retired at 10.30 a.m. after the summing-up by his Honour, returned at 2.15 p.m. to have the definition of murder and manslaughter reread, and returned at 4.10 p.m. with its verdict.
