Oceania Kiwis beaten

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australia’s Tommy Danielsson became the Oceania representative for the World Cup table tennis tournament in China later this year after he breezed through unbeaten in the ’qualifying series with New Zealand here last night. Danielsson, the Australian singles champion, wrapped up the series with a 14-21, 21-15, 21-19 victory over 19-year-old former Australian champion, Gary Haberl, of Newcastle. Earlier the Swedish-born Danielsson beat the two New Zealand nominees for the series, Peter Jackson and Malcolm Temperley, both .from Auckland. Danielsson, aged 27, who migrated to Australia in 1982 and now lives with his Australian wife Karen at

Geelong, disposed of Temperley and Jackson in straight sets. He downed Temperley Zill and 21-18 but had to work a little harder to elbow aside the challenge of Jackson, New Zealand’s number one, 21-17, 21-19. Earlier, Jackson had secured Danielsson’s World Cup spot in upsetting Haberl 21-19, 21-12. Bolstered by his win over Haberl, Jackson then troubled Danielsson in the first set of their clash, frequently picking off the Australian champion with a superbly disguised serve and magnificently placed angled passing shots. But Danielsson’s greater experience finally told, with the former Swedish international taking the points that mattered most with ice-cool precision.
