Pinafores practical
Pinafores for winter seem especially popular with older women who wear them with blouses or heavier jerseys. They are obviously a practical outfit and usually made in a tough wearing woollen fabric that will go with any colour and last for years. When you are making and fitting the pinafore wear it over the blouse or jersey or it will be too tight. Pay attention to the armholes as a jersey will need plenty of room. You may have to compromise because if you make the armhole too big you will not be able to wear the pinafore on its own.
It is a good idea to line the pinafore. It will sit better over a rough jersey and be easier and neater to make. Pockets or pocket flaps are often used to break the length. To make a pocket flap cut a strip, fold it lengthways, with right sides facing and stitch across the ends. Turn to the right side, press and topstitch round the edges. Topstitching is usual on a . pinafore — you may need to release the pressure on the machine foot if using a heavy fabric, especially when sewing the flaps on.
