Shepard double bill

A Sam Shepard double bill opens at the Drama Studio of the Christchurch Teachers’ College next Tuesday. The Free Theatre is presenting “Action” and “Tongues.” On the latter Shepard collaborated with actor Joe Chaiken. Shepard is known as an actor in spite of having written more than 40 plays. His work is rich in language and imagery. In 1979 he won the Pulitzer Prize for drama for his play “Buried Child.” He has also won several Obie awards for his work. He has played in films such as “Country,” “Frances” and “The Right Stuff.” Shepard’s plays create fictional worlds full of American myths, dreams and realities. Carol Bellini-Sharp, in Christchurch as a Fulbright lecturer from the United States, will direct. The double bill will run from July 9 to 13.
