Marine farming

Sir,—During our recent visit to the beautiful town and harbour of Akaroa, we were disturbed to learn that the Akaroa County Council had approved a proposal for commercial marine farming in the Akaroa harbour. Our first impressions of Akaroa were of a delightful and tranquil haven for the people of Christchurch for recreation and water sports. If the scheme approved is allowed to happen, then this gem of nature could be lost for ever. In Japan we saw many coastal areas that have been ruined because of commercial exploitation — imagine acres and acres of rafts and buoys, not to speak of the pollution problems. We caution your local authorities not to rush blindly into the despoliation of your beautiful country, but to learn from the mistakes of others. — Yours, etc., DRS A. and M. CANNEMEYER. Los Angeles, June 22, 1985.
