The German Federal Railways has marked the 150th anniversary of railways in Germany with the introduction, of an inter-city experimental train in Essen. The train is part of a research programme to study the practicalities of a proposed inter-city service of fast trains. The train will be tested at speeds of up to 350km/h but its maximum speed in service will be 250km/h. The service is scheduled to begin in 1990 between Hanover and Wurzburg, and between Mannheim and Stuttgart.
