Pruning trees
PA Wellington Landowners will have to accept responsibility for pruning trees to avoid damage to electrical supplies under legislation introduced to Parliament yesterday. The Electricity Amend- ■ ment Bill aims to resolve problems such as in Tauranga recently where badly maintained shelter belts for kiwifruit farming had created an intolerable imposition on other landowners, said the acting Minister of Energy, Mr Colman. Dairy farmers in that re-
gion had suffered constant interruptions to their electricity supply, he said. It was also quite unacceptable for public safety to be threatened when uncontrolled tree growth caused 11,000 volt electric lines to break and live lines to fall on roads. Mr Colman said under the legislation the electricity supply authority could do the remedial work and then seek reimbursement. The bill was introduced without division and referred to the Commerce and Energy Select Committee.
