Sugar rationed in parts of N.Z.

PA Hamilton The first signs of sugar rationing at wholesale and retail levels are showing in Waikato. An industrial dispute at New Zealand’s sole refinery, Chelsea, in Auckland has stopped output since June 26. Managers for two wholesalers in Hamilton, AWL and Foodstuffs, said their warehouses had begun limiting the number of sugar bales available to retailers, but supermarket managers said there had not yet been a rush by customers and stocks were holding out. Two Hamilton stores approached yesterday had begun limiting customers to one or two bags. A supermarket chain in Auckland is rationing sugar.' Foodtown’s general manager, Mr Quentin Ross, said the chain had a week’s supply of sugar and it was

being rationed to two bags a customer. In Christchurch there is no sign of sugar rationing. The manager of J. Rattray and Son, Mr M. Prendergast, said last evening that there had been no rush “at this stage.” “There has been a price increase which has encouraged people to buy more but I believe stocks (of sugar) are very high in the South island,” he said.
