Netball league adding 2 sides
The Swiss Maid club netball league will be extended to include a further two teams next year, New Zealand Netball Association president, Mrs Anne Taylor, announced yesterday.
The increase from a six to eight team league will mean a series of regional play-offs for the two extra places. Both Carmel Mainzeal (North Shore), the defending champion and Verdettes (Hamilton), last year’s runner-up, will be exempted from challenges for their league places.
The other four teams must make themselves available for challenge, Mrs Taylor said.
“Auckland and Waikato regional winners will play
off for automatic entry. Hawke’s Bay and Wellington regional winners will play off and so will Canterbury and Otago-Southland winners,” Mrs Taylor said. “The winners of each of these play-offs will meet each other, and the winner of that will have automatic entry. “All of. those challenges will be part of the sponsorship arrangement, and the travel costs will be paid.
“All the losers will have the right to one more challenge at their own expense, and they must challenge one of the bottom four from this year’s league,” she said. The netball association has made the changes in the league after going through team reports.
