Chess match drawn
Canterbury’s two top schoolboy chess players, Mark Wilson (Christchurch 8.H.5.) and Stephen Lukey (Cashmere), drew an adjudicated match in the fourth round of “The Press” schools’ A grade chess competition. Lukey’s half point, however, was all that Cashmere managed against the strong Christchurch Boys’ team. Burnside dropped only one game against St Bede’s and the unbeaten Christ’s College won five of its six games against Linwood. Fenton Dalziel (St Bede’s) had a good win against the well performed Burnside No. 2, Richard Whelan, and Linwood’s victory was gained by its No. 1, Quentin
Johnson, who toppled Dean Edwards, the Christ’s College No. 1 who was equal third in the recent Canterbury secondary schoolpupils’ championship. In the other grades, St Andrew’s Preparatory did specially well against the intermediate school champion for the last two years, Cobham. An adjudicated match favoured Cobham A and gave it victory, 4-2.
