Study of road ‘black spots’
PA Wellington Investigation teams will be set up to identify road accident “black spots” round New Zealand. The Minister of Works and Development, Mr Colman, and the Minister of Transport, Mr Prebble, said the teams would work on urban and rural roads and would be asked to suggest improvements. The teams would have staff from the two Ministries, and local authorities would be asked to help.
“Both Ministries have for some time been examining ways of achieving accident reductions with low cost road engineering improvements,” the Ministers said.
A member of the British Transport and Road Research Laboratory, Miss Barbara Sabey, who spent a year in New Zealand as an adviser, had assessed that accident reductions of up to 15 per cent were achievable. Messrs Colman and Prebble said that on the basis of the calculated
annual costs of road accidents of . $5lO million, this represented potential savings of up to $76 million for an initial outlay of about $3 million. The first full-time team would be set up in Wellington. It was hoped other teams would be set up in Auckland and "Christchurch over the next two years.
