Church rejects doctors who do abortions
NZPA-AFP Madrid The Catholic Church in Spain has decided to excommunicate doctors who do abortions. The decision was made by the episcopal conference after a special meeting in Madrid to discuss the moral and Christian issues raised by the decriminalisation of abortion in Spain. Announcing its decision, the conference said it felt moved to “protect the life of the unborn and to try to strengthen the conscience of Catholics on this subject”. It would therefore “automatically excommunicate anyone who directly practises abor-
tion and those who co-oper-ate physically or morally.” It said that staff at State and private hospitals and clinics had the right, “even the obligation”, to be conscientious objectors if the authorities, their superiors or the owners of private clinics tried to force them to practise or co-operate in the practice of abortions. Abortion was recently legalised after a drawn-out judicial and political battle in three specific cases: pregnancy after rape, the malformation of the foetus, and where the health of the mother is at risk.
