Shipping news Quiet time for harbour ferry
Mid-winter is a lean time of year for the Diamond Harbour launch service at Lyttelton.
Not only is there lower patronage of the daily harbour sightseeing cruise on cold winter days, but also the number of persons commuting by launch from Diamond Harbour has fallen markedly in the last couple of years.
More people are living in Diamond Harbour, so those who work in Christchurch must be preferring to make the half-hour drive round the head of the Harbour and over Dyers Pass than to take advantage of the convenient ferry service to and from Lyttelton.
The launch, which is run by the Lyttelton Borough Council, makes eight commuter trips on weekdays, with an extra one on Thursdays.
The harbour sightseeing cruise departs each day, rain or shine, at 2.30 p.m. The cost
