Miss Sadie Balkind

Miss Sadie Balkind, known for her work in the fields of education, conservation and the arts, died in Christchurch recently. She was 73. Miss Balkind was a first day pupil at Avonside Girls’ High School and later gained a master of arts degree with honours from the University of Canterbury. ?

She went on to a career in teaching. At the time of her retirement Miss Balkind was the senior inspector of secondary schools in Christchurch. Miss Balkind was a member of many organisations. They included the Friends of the Theatre Royal, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal New Zealand Forest and Bird Society.
