Big by-election win

PA Palmerston North Mr Paul Rieger trounced his four contenders in the Palmerston North mayoral by-election on Saturday. It was the biggest mayoral contest in the city’s history and the first time the city’s mayor has been chosen at a by-election. Mr Rieger, aged 51, with 12,239 votes, won almost four times as many votes as ’ the second-highest polling candidate, Mr Pat Kelliher.

Mr Rieger said that all indications had pointed to his winning the election but he was a “little surprised and secretly very pleased” about his huge majority. He said he had had a great advantage over the four other candidates because he had taken on the mayoral role 2Vz months ago when the former Mayor, Mr Brian Elwood, resigned to become chairman of the Local Government Commission.
