Stiff fines after coach tragedy
NZPA-Reuter Dijon, France A coach owner and driver have been fined and given suspended jail sentences for manslaughter in France’s worst road crash which killed 53 people, including 44 children, court officials said.
Two coaches and six cars collided near Beaune, central France, on July 31, 1982. One coach caught fire killing 49 of the 63 people on board, among them the children. Four occupants of a car also died.
The coach owner, Mr Jean Boutaz, got a 25,000franc ($5782) fine and a oneyear suspended sentence. The driver, Mr Antoine Alu, got a 15,000-franc ($3426) fine and a six-month suspended sentence. The pair were not required under French law to admit or deny guilt.
