McCarroll wins table tennis

Grant McCarroll (A.B.L. Riccarton), fresh from his triumphs in the South Island and Otago championships over the last two week-ends, was too strong for his Dallington opponents when the second round of A grade inter-club table tennis started this week.

Helped by McCarroll’s team mate, Ling Nan Ming, a former South Island champion, who also won three singles, the Riccarton side beat Dallington, 9-3, to retain second position. The Entwistle brothers, Darrin and Karl, were also unbeaten on the night and helped maintain Auto Centre Avonside’s leading spot. Meanwhile, • Merivale Pharmacy Riccarton moved into third place by beating Printshop Avonside, 8-4. Avonside lost in spite of another good effort from Mike Burrowes who won all of his matches.

John Armstrong, Alan Alabaster and Tony Sargent each had a brace of singles wins for Riccarton. There was a close bottom of the table clash with Riccarton Evergreens narrowly overcoming Avonside 111. The Swedish visitor, Bodil Martinsson, who won the Otago women’s title last week-end, played well to win three singles and carry the night for Riccarton. Results.—
