AUSTRALIA Most stocks ease

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed marginally easier as institutions re-evaluated investment strategies after the end of the financial year last week, brokers said. They said turn-over was exceptionally low, with national turn-over of 47.8 million shares, valued at $35.5 million. Rises outnumbered falls by 20 to 17. At the close of trading, the all ordinaries index had eased 0.6 points to 860.2, the all industrials marker had slipped 3.5 points to 1236.7 and the all resources indicator had gained 1.5 points to 568.0. The gold index rose 5.3 points to 811.1 after a 50c increase in the Hong Kong gold price on Saturday. Brokers said local investors were sidelined by the start of the national tax summit and the forthcoming Federal budget One of the major features was a 13c slump in Myer Emporium to 222 c. Myer was the subject of heavy turn-over and take-over speculation last week. Among resource stocks, BHP fell 2c to 632 and CSR added lc to 285. In the heavyweight mining sector CRA dropped 8c to 598, MIM 6c to 272, North Broken Hill 3c to 223 and Western Mining 3c to 375.
