Superannuation schemes

Sir,—Mrs Sally Couper may be wrong when she writes, “In 15 years there are going to be so many old people that it is extremely doubtful if the lesser number in the work force will be able to pay enough taxes to support them.” In 15 years the use of computers and increased automation should result in a reduced work force to meet all the necessities of life for New Zealand. There may still be unemployment among the unskilled and newlyqualified people with degrees but no practical experience. In my view it was an unnecessary piece of spite on the part of the Labour Government to impose the 25 per cent superannuation surtax when they spend millions of dollars on new Ministries and civil servants to work them and GST, which enables them to say they have reduced the number of unemployed. — Yours, etc., H. F. NEWMAN. Rangiora, June 29, 1985.
