Deep Cove water

Sir,—Your correspondent Eric Bennett (June 21) is obviously well read. He is able, apparently from Wellington, to obtain information of a formidable nature and give the impression of first-hand experience and knowledge. However, his pommon expressions of “despoliation,” etc., give a real hint to the way in which he reads and interprets his information. The Deep Cove water export proposal would provide relief to parched areas of the world desperate for fresh water. Surely this is the kind of aid we should be giving to the Third World. What has made Deep Cove accessible was the construction of the power station. Little environmental damage was done with this massive undertaking. I saw large fuel tankers and cargo ships regularly travel up to Deep Cove with no real effect. The outflow from the tail race is but a small drop compared with the natural water inflow into the sound as a whole. — Yours, etc., JOHN D. HUSTON, Greymouth. June 21, 1985.
