Afghanistan
Sir,—l was appalled at both the naivety and apparent lack of principle shown in your editorial on Afghanistan. You appear to think that a fair and acceptable solution to the Soviet problem involves allowing the Russians a face-saving retreat. The idea appears to be that Soviet troops withdraw, leaving the communist Government in place, on the condition that the mujahideen freedom fighters are denied outside support. How is this fair to the Afghan people? The Afghans do not want to live under a communist regime, whether Russian or Afghan. The Soviets are fighting with increased desperation and are increasingly resorting to terror in a major effort to stamp out resistance. The only “fair” solution is for the Soviet troops to be thrown out, the communist Government to be overthrown, and the Afghan people regain their freedom. — Yours, etc., T. R. LOUDON, Kaiapoi. June 22, 1985.
