Diesel on rugby pitch

PA Auckland Twenty people last evening spread diesel on the playing surface of Eden Park, venue of the All Black-Wallaby test on Saturday, and tried to pull down a goalpost. The group cut through a fence on the Cricket Avenue entrance just before 7 p.m. Security officers, quick to spot the intruders, called

the police. In the meantime, a rope was tied to a goalpost in an attempt to pull it down. The post did not budge.

Diesel was sprayed on the in-goal area in front of the terraces during the 10-min-ute raid. Four white crosses were planted. Security guards said the group sped off in five cars. It is believed the diesel

was used to write an antitour message on the ground. The leader of the antiapartheid group, Hart, Mr John Minto, declined to dissociate his organisation from the protest.

“The fact that four white crosses were planted in the ground says that rugby is not as important as the lives of black Africans,” he said.
