Regional employment board endorsed

A regional employment board was endorsed by 70 representatives of business, education, and the unemployed at a workshop in Christchurch on Saturday.

The workshop was held to discuss the proposal for such a board, which was made at the recent employment promotion conference in Wellington.

Mr Terry Hill, co-ordina-tor of the Canterbury Resource Centre, said there had been strong call for the board as a means of all sectors in the community having a say about employment projects in the Canterbury region. The regional board would replace the District Employment and Advisory Training Committee, set up by the previous Govern-

ment. Participants in the workshop, held at the Canterbury Public Library, discussed the principle of a board and the finer details, Mr Hill said. A task force of the workshop organising committee plus one or two others was set up to refine the proposal for the board to be put to the Minister of Employment, Mr Burke, in the next few weeks. Mr Hill said he believed the establishment of the board was urgent. Regional employment boards would run within broad Government guidelines but with some autonomy on projects in their regions. Some Christchurch members of Parliament attended the workshop.
