Fowler records fastest time in cycling

The top cyclist, Brian Fowler (Woolston W.M.C.) notched up fastest time in the two races he competed in at Timaru at the weekend. Fowler was one of a sizeable field of riders that braved cold, blustery conditions on Saturday in the Peter Howes Memorial Classic handicap event over 65km. Raced over the Redruth-Washdyke-Pareora Gorge

circuit, the event turned into a gift one two placing for Healing Papanui’s Jason Smith, with a 23-minute handicap, and Mark Lucas (19min). Smith hit the front at the Pareora Gorge with only Peter Watson of Invercargill with him. Over the final kilometre it was Smith’s strength that won through with Watson slipping to third as Lucas pipped him in a sprint to the finish. Fowler rode well to notch fastest time of 1:33:47 sec. The Alan Loach Memorial handicap yesterday was raced over the same 80km circuit used in the New Zealand championships at Timaru last year. The tough course and the conditions led to a large number of withdrawals, but Dean Buzan (Woolston

W.M.C.) riding off the 24minute mark and Watson rode clear on the final circuit and knuckled down for a sprint finish. Watson, once again, could not find the staying power and lost out to Buzan for line honours. Fowler, off the scratch mark, powered away from the scratch bunch to notch an impressive fastest time and fifth place. Results.—
