Ski-ing good

PA Wellington In spite of a mild winter, the ski season is looking good for both North Island and South Island fields this year, according to industry spokesmen. Mount Hutt has been open for about three weeks, although running on a reduced basis. Organisers hope to open the Coronet Peek field on Tuesday, and Turoa at Mount Ruapehu on July 4. However, Whakapapa at Mount Ruapehu field still needed at least one or two good snowstorms before it could be used, said a park ranger, Mr Paui Dale. “But it is looking good,”

he said. Mount Ruapehu’s Turoa ski-field manager, Mr Tony Wright, said the season was looking encouraging. “We are not worried about the warm winter ... in fact it is quite the reverse,” he said. In the South Island the new Remarkables field was expected to be ready for ski-ing by July 1, said the Mount Cook Group public affairs manager, Mr Ted Beckett. In future, the field would probably be open from about mid-June. Coronet Peak was looking exceptionally good for both snow and forward bookings.
