Colleges draw, 10-10
St Andrew’s College went close to scoring an upset when it held Christ’s College to a 10-10 draw in the main first XVs secondary schools rugby match of the week. Christ’s College evened the scores in the last few minutes with a pressure try. Scorers for St Andrew’s were Michael Lee with a try and Greg O’Reilly and Ralph Brunie, with one penalty goal each. Christ’s points were all scored by David Tudehope with a try and two penalties. In the other matches of the week Christchurch Boys' High School had to work hard for its 19-8 win over an improved Shirley Boys’ High School XV. Points for Christchurch
Boys’ came from tries by Camron Townsend and Stephen Smith. Chris Percy was successful with one conversion and three penalties. Shirley’s points resulted from two tries, one each to Brett Tucker and Scott Millar. Linwood High School encountered a very creditable forward effort when it played Cashmere High School, but this was not enough to counter the fast Linwood backline. The final score was 34-4, Linwood scoring seven tries. These went to Neil Orsbourn (2), David Robertson (2), Tai Parata (2) and Bevan Pearse. George Wright converted three of these tries. Cashmere’s points came from a try to Mark Pearson.
