Mr Mahon takes mediator’s post
PA Wellington Mr Peter Mahon, the former High Court judge, has been asked to mediate between the two Vietnam veterans’ associations and the Returned Services’ Association over the Agent Orange fund.
The request was made by the Minister of Defence, Mr O’Flynn, who said yesterday that a meeting would be
called to ensure that the requirements of Judge Jack Weinstein, of the American Federal Court, were met. The meeting will involve representatives of the
R.S.A., the Ex-Vietnam Veterans’ Association, the New Zealand Vietnam Veterans’ Association, Mr Mahon, and departmental officials. In his decision last month, Judge Weinstein gave New Zealand until September 1 to provide a satisfactory
plan for distribution of the $BBB,OOO allocated to veterans affected by Agent Orange.
Mr O’Flynn said that Mr Mahon had agreed to chair a meeting between the groups, as well as chairing the Agent Orange Settlement Trust Fund.
