Craft shop not allowed
An application for a tourist craft shop at the corner of Mona Vale Avenue and Riccarton Road has been declined by the Riccarton Borough Council. The council’s written decision said the area was zoned Residential C, which meant that no shops, except dairies, were allowed. There was pressure for commercial development in the area and the council did not want to create a precedent for other retail outlets which would not confrom to the zoning use. The applicant, Mr P. W. McGlinchy, had told a townplanning hearing last month that the shop site would be close to motels which would have generated trade. ' But the decision said the council was satisfied Mr McGlinchy could find another. site correctly zoned for a shop.
