Minister denies claims
PA Wellington The Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, has denied claims by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, that overseas debt has increased hugely since Labour came to power. Mr Douglas said that the previous National Government had added a net $1317 million of new borrowing in
three months from April 1 to July 14, 1984. Labour, by contrast, had borrowed only a net $254 million in the eight months from the election to the end of the financial year on March 31. “That is a real slowdown," he said, in reply to comments Mr Bolger made in a Timaru by-election speech on Wednesday.
