Flower workers award the first

Workers who are employed by commercial flower growers have obtained their first industrial award, under the Agricultural Workers Act. The award is a national one and rates of pay and conditions of employment take effect from tomorrow. The award will run for a year. It was negotiated by the Labourers’ Union in Wellington on May 16 and 17 before a conciliator, Mr Frank Maguire. The union advocate, Mr Barry Brown, said in Christchurch yesterday that previously some of the workers were paid under the market gardens award while others were paid under the Minimum Wages Act. The award provides for a

top rate of $250.40 a week gross for workers who have completed an apprenticeship in horticulture. The minimum adult rate is $2OO a week for harvesters and packers. Workers under the age of 19 will receive junior rates of pay, calculated as precentages of the adult rate.
