Top basketbailer returns to N.Z.
Jeanette Howard, formerly of Christchurch and previously one of New Zealand’s most talented basketbailers who has spent the last seven years in Australia, has accepted an invitation to take part in the national women’s trials in Hamilton over Queen’s Birthday week-end. The New Zealand team will have the difficult task of meeting Australia on September 11 to September 15 in a best-of-three world championship qualifying series in Australia and Howard’s presence should boost New Zealand's chances.
Howard, aged 24, went to Australia during the highlight of her New Zealand career at the age of 17. In 1978 she led both the Mairehau High School team and the Canterbury junior side under the well-known coach Kerry Williams. That year she won selection to the New Zealand team only to be enticed to Sydney by the Manly-Warringa Club in September after being spotted during a school team visit to Australia earlier that year. While Sydney based and f
owning a courier business, she was selected as a New South Wales state representative for four seasons and twice was selected in the elite Sydney All Stars selection.
Early in 1984 she moved to Brisbane and was promptly selected for the Brisbane state team but the team did not get the state championships. On many occasions, Howard has been pressured to become a naturalised Australian to enable her to be selected for Australia but has so far preferred to remain a New Zealander. She has had success in coaching particularly under--14 girls' teams. She is also an experienced touch rugby player. The 16 trialists from which a team of 12 will be selected are:—
Di Robertson (Napier). Ann McLaughlin (Hamilton), Nina Nawalowalo (Wellington). Howard. Veronica Thompson (Wellington). Marie Poto, Sue Haldane. Mary Po-Ching (Auckland), Sheryl George (New Plymouth), McMeeken. Carolyne' Grey (Hamilton), Hannen. Lines, Brenda Ellison (Auckland), Aho Perfect (Rotorua), and Wright.
