Orderly withdraws claim
PA Dunedin A charge orderly seeking damages from the Otago Hospital Board, on the ground that he was subjected to detriment for not being a union member, has withdrawn his case from an Arbitration Court hearing in Dunedin. Clayton Alastair Harris claimed detriment because he had been suspended from his job at Dunedin Hospital for refusing to transfer from charge orderly at the hospital’s front door to an orderly job in the fracture unit, the Court had heard. The board had joined as third parties the Otago Hotel, Hospital and Restaurant Workers’ Union, its secretary, and a number of union members. Defence evidence was to have been heard on Tuesday morning but after discussions with counsel in chambers lasting four hours Judge Finnigan indicated that the case lapsed because Mr Harris had withdrawn his claim.
