Tyre shortage ‘largely overcome’

PA Wellington A tyre shortage which developed earlier this year has now largely been overcome, said the chief executive of Dunlop (N.Z.), Ltd, Mr David Hills, yesterday. Strikes earlier this year at both Dunlop’s Upper Hutt tyre factory and Firestone’s Christchurch plant, caused the shortage. The Trade and Industry Department, fearing the shortage would cripple production in car plants, granted imports for more than 50,000 extra tyres. Mr Hills said the imported tyres had to be landed before July 31. “The industry thought the Government over-reacted.” However, imports were generally exotic types of tyres and more expensive, he said. In a year for the replacement market for cars, the industry expects to sell about *600,000 locally-made tyres, he said. “At the end of April there were 102,000 tyres in stock, there is no shortage now. That is not to say there is not a problem in individual sizes.”
