Peninsula talks on amalgamation
The Mount Herbert County Council has called for a meeting with other councils on Banks Peninsula to discuss local body amalgamation in the area.
Councillors decided at a meeting on Monday to write to the Akaroa and Wairewa councils to arrange a meeting. The proposed meeting comes after a visit to Christchurch last week by
Mr Brian Elwood, chairman of the Local GovernmentCommission. Mr Elwood has asked councils in the Christchurch area to put forward amalgamation plans by the end of the year.
Councillors at Monday’s meeting discussed several ideas for amalgamation, including a Banks Peninsula Authority which could include Lyttelton as well as Mount Herbert, Akaroa, and Wairewa.
