N.Z. act seen as attack
NZPA-Reuter Singapore A Singapore newspaper yesterday described New Zealand’s decision to ease out Singapore and Brunei from its trade preferences scheme as an attack on small nations. The “Business Times,” the island’s only financial daily, said in an editorial: “New Zealand’s sudden and unilateral action is a matter of concern. So is its inflexible attitude ... It has more to gain by uniting with other small nations rather than attacking them.” Wellington should consider the special circumstances of nations such as Singapore rather than use the single criterion of income levels to decide its list of benefiting countries, the “'Business Times” said.
