Veteran jockey retires
NZPA Sydney The former champion Sydney jockey, Jack Thompson, aged 62, has retired from race riding. The veteran rider has been granted a number one trainer’s licence and will be given a presentation by the A.J.C. next month for his great services to racing. Thompson, who has ridden infrequently in recent months, won the Sydney Jockeys’ Premiership twice while still an apprentice and on five other occasions. He has won every big race in Sydney and helped the trainer, Tommy Smith, to fame by riding Smith’s first winner, Bragger, to victory during the 19405.
