Congress for organists

The annual New Zealand Association of Organists congress will be held in Christchurch at the weekend.

The three-day congress will include an organ playing competition, an organ crawl, a congress dinner, a choral evensong and congress recital and the association’s annual meeting.

The guest recitalist for the congress is Anthony Jennings, who is a lecturer at the University of Auckland and the Auckland Cathedral organist. He will speak on organ reform on Saturday afternoon and give a recital at the Rugby Street Methodist Church.

The organ playing contest

will be held on Saturday morning in the Rugby Street Church and the St Mary’s Church at Merivale. The organ crawl to follow will take in several historic pipe organs in the city. The official congress dinner is on Saturday evening. On Sunday afternoon there will be a performance of “Zadok the Priest” in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. On Sunday evening the evensong will be at the Christchurch Cathedral followed by a recital by the Cathedral organist, David Childs.

Mr Jennings will follow this with a harpsichord recital in the State Trinity Theatre. There will also be a musical offering from the members of the Christ-

church branch of the association.

On Monday morning the association will hold its

annual meeting and an audio-visual presentation will be given on European organs.
