Referee criticised by coach

The referee, Mr Tony Drake, and the young Canterbury second-row forward, Adrian Shelford, were very much in the thoughts of the St Helens rugby league coach, Mr Bill Benyon, after the 24-30 loss yesterday. “I couldn’t understand the referee. We were not allowed to play the ball quickly as we do in Britain because opponents were holding down the man with the ball,” said Mr Benyon. “That caused frustration among the players.” He was also critical of Mr Drake’s rulings on high tackles. When asked if any Canterbury players would be especially worthy of an approach to turn professional, Mr Benyon gave the impression that all he wanted for Christmas was an open cheque and Shelford’s telephone number. “That No. 11 (Shelford), I think he made the difference, and he played well against Auckland too. He had a hand in two or three tries, and would do well in Britain. I wouldn’t say no to him,” said Mr Benyon.
