Carmel, Verdettes make netball final
PA Auckland Carmel Mainzeal (North Shore), which yesterday beat Collegiate (Auckland) 57-36, will meet Verdettes (Waikato) in the final of the national netball league on June 8. On Saturday Carmel had a 51-35 win over Verdettes in the Swiss Maid competition, but the latter, one point ahead of Collegiate in the series, won the right to challenge the North Shore side again in the final. The game will be played at Onewa Domain, Takapuna. Carmel, the national club
champion for the third year running, finished the roundrobin competition with 10 points, compared with Verdettes’ six. Sacred Heart Old Girls assured itself of a place in the Swiss Maid league next year by beating Pacific Island Church 75-62 at Christchurch on Saturday. Stephanie Stokes proved deadly accurate as Sacred Heart’s goal shooter and she was well supported by the goal attack, Diana Sullivan. Leigh Gibbs led Sacred heart by example and her interceptions helped the
team to control the game in the first quarter when it went ahead 21-11. P.I.C. then changed its line-up, with centre, Rita Fatialofa, moving to goal cittcick But Sacred Heart maintained its advantage, leading 57-44 into a scrappy fourth quarter. Points table at end of round robin:—
