Afghanistan
Sir,—ln two leading articles of “The Press,” “Afghanistan’s weary war” (May 20) and “Mr Gorbachev’s proposal” (May 23) reference is made to “the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.” This terminology is totally incorrect. It should not be beyond the resources of “The Press” to learn of the Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation, and Good Neighbourliness between the Soviet Union and Afghanistan signed on December 5, 1978, which provides for mutual military aid in the event of external aggression against either party. These provisions were invoked by the Afghan Government and responded to by the Soviet Government in December, 1979. To describe as an invasion, military aid rendered to one ally by another erodes the integrity of the language. It is surely not too much to expect that future editorial policy of “The Press” acknowledge that Afghanistan and the Soviet Union are treaty allies—Yours, etc., M. CREEL. May 24, 1985.
