Tests in Pacific

Sir,—The A.N.Z.U.S. debate becomes more ludicrous by the day. Our esteemed American partner proposes to lob his test missiles into the Tasman. Soviet tests are aimed between Wake Island and Hawaii, hardly our backyard. Noone should test any weapon in territory other than his own. Why should the Soviet practice be found more villainous than the American or, for that matter, than the French? The entire suicidal, mindless process needs to be halted now. The first step must be recognition of one basic fact, whether they are Russian, American or French. We are talking about people, none of them vastly different from us. They are not impersonal or inanimate objects. Let us remember that the greatest enemy of peace is fear. He who exists in a state of fear is seldom rational—Yours, etc., MRS A. J. FLANAGAN.
