Merely Magic looks capable of winning the first of the three heats of the South Island Championships at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s on-course totalisator meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park tomorrow evening.

A brilliant winner at the sweepstake meeting there earlier this month, Merely Magic has shown great potential in his short career and from the “ace” position could test the speedy front runner and likely favourite, Crafty Kim.

The race between these two promising greyhounds should be a good contest, with Beaumaris looking the only danger.

Gallant Man, a brilliant winner of the Inter-island Championships at Claudelands last month, should be all the rage for the second semi-final.

He was somewhat disappointing in his last appearance at Queen Elizabeth II Park before going north, but appears to be back to his best now and should win. Aera’s Havoc looks a threat from the rails draw, while Galetic Gain and Footrot Lass are smart and should not be overlooked.

Spanish Bijou also appears to have bounced back to his best form, and would only have to produce a performance similar to the one which gained him a second to Gallant Man at Claudelands to be a pastthe- post proposition here.

Retactri is honest, and looks a good place bet. Wee Donna Dandy and Havoc’s Planet could also be considered in a field which badly lacks form.
