Polytech. still growing

Christchurch Polytechnic is now the second-lergest polytechnic in New Zealand, according to provisional statistics released by the Education Department. Auckland Technical Institute is the largest of the 22 polytechnics. Last year Christchurch Polytechnic had a total of 2,095,785 student hours, or 173,528 class hours. This includes 187,248 student hours for the Labour Department Young Persons Training Programmes and School Leaver Training and Employment Preparation

Schemes, the highest in New Zealand. These figures were presented to a Polytechnic Council meeting on Monday evening by one of the associate directors, Mr David Kerr. The polytechnic was quickly reaching the total size of 2,600,000 student hours recommended by the Education Department for a single institution, he said. “We are not trying to build an empire and be the largest in the country,” he said. “The polytechnic’s growth reflects to a large extent

the type of courses offered. If we do not offer the courses people need, they do not come.” Mr Kerr said staff had worked very hard to offer courses which met the needs of the community, industry, and commerce. Offering the right courses was more important than the size.

A plan for the next 10 years, “Towards the Year 2000,” was being developed now and should be ready early next year, he said.
